Dong people

Most Dong people live in Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Among the regions, Miao and Dong Autonomous Region in southeast Guizhou is the most concentrated area of Dong. In 1990, there were more than two and a half million people living in the area.
Dong ethnicity originated from Bai Yue (百越), which was called Luo Yue (駱越) in Qin and Han Dynasty and Liao (僚) in Wei and Jin Dynasty. Dong is a branch of Liao.

From historic records, Dong ethnic was regarded as “Cage people”or “Cage barbarians”, while they regarded themselves as Gan (甘). In Song dynasty, they are named as Yi Ling (仡伶). After Ming Dynasty, they were called Dong Liao (峒僚), Dong Man (峒蠻), Dong Miao (峒苗), or being mistaken as Miao (苗). After the establishment of People’s Republic of China,  their name is unified as Dong.

Dong people mainly work in farm. The most grown crop is round-grained rice while the second most is glutinous rice. They are good at cultivating rice fields and fish. Dong people also work in forestry, and are famous for growing China fir and tea-oil tree. Serving guests with tea oil is a tradition of passionate and hospitable Dong people. Dong women enjoys growing cotton, embroidering and dying clothes.

Dong people take pride of the fact that everyone can sing. Dong region are regarded as “The ocean of poems and songs. The unique and fascinating drum towers and flower bridges in the villages symbolize the art sense of Dong people in architecture.
